Stopping roadside at this amazing National Monument was such an incredible experience. I couldn’t believe that I had never really even heard of Aztec Ruins National Monument before I started planning our road trip north. First off, its FREE to get into. There are several things in the National Park System that are free which is always nice.
When you arrive, make your way to the visitor’s center. They have some incredible artifacts and so much information to consume. Per usual, they have a short film you can watch about the monument and as far as visitor center films go, this one was actually pretty good. I’ve sat through some major snooze films at other places.
If you have kids, make sure to grab a Jr Ranger book to complete. They have 3 different options based on your child’s interest. There is a good mix of indoor and outdoor tasks for them to complete. Keagan always enjoys Jr Ranger activities, especially scoring the badge at the end.
While you are at the visitor’s center, I would highly encourage you to buy a Trail Guide. This little book will cost you $2.00 and it is worth every penny. As you walk the trail outside, each area has an assigned number that corresponds with the book. You will learn and appreciate so much more of Aztec with this guide. Worth it!
Walking along the trail outside, we were in awe of the sheer size of the structures. Knowing that they had been built hundreds of years ago, by hand, made them even more amazing.
Each area took us through different buildings. Watch your head as some were really low.
One of the more exciting details we got from the stop was the connections it has to 2 other areas in the National Park System. Chaco Culture National Historic Park to the south and Mesa Verde National Park to the north. These 3 sites have a true connection and if you can make your way to all 3, you should.
We had an amazing time at this monument. It certainly opened up my eyes to what National Monuments have to offer and I can’t wait to see more of them.
Consider the Wonders is not affiliated with Aztec Ruins National Monument or the National Park System. BUT WE LOVE THEM!!!
