Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the sights and sounds all around you at Dugout Wells in Big Bend National Park. After your belly is full, take a walk on the Chihuahuan Desert Nature trail and search for wildlife tracks and every cactus you can imagine.
This trail is located at Dugout Wells on the east side of Big Bend National Park.
Dugout Wells was once “the cultural center of Big Bend” because it has water. You’ll learn a little history here with the windmill that helps improve water flow at the site. How does that even happen? It’s amazing!
This is an excellent spot for bird watching! The trees make a wonderful oasis for the birds of Big Bend. It’s also a great place to sit and have a picnic. There are a few picnic tables to choose from and lots of shade. You’ll feel as if you’re in the middle of nowhere with great views for miles and the quiet of this little slice of nature.
Don’t leave the area without taking a walk on the nature trail. This easy 0.5 mile hike is completely flat. Watch out for cactus as you meander along the trail. There is a possibility of seeing a Javelina here as they enjoy eating cactus. We saw signs of roadrunner activity with some tracks but never spotted the elusive Javelina. Maybe next time.
