Enjoy the outdoors with all of the great activities at Fairfield Lake State Park. You can swim, boat, fish, hike, ride your horse, camp, meet up with friends, and have some much needed time in nature.
This State Park has 4 camping area options to fit your needs. PARK MAP On the west side of the lake you can camp at Big Brown Creek Primitive Camping Area. This is a HIKE IN ONLY camping area with a minimum 3 mile trek to your site. Make sure you bring water and pack everything out that you bring in. On the east side of the lake you have the 3 additional camping options. The first is the Springfield Camping Area. This area offers water hooks ups and is designed for tents and possibly small trailers. With lots of trees, it’s nicely shaded and gives a nice feeling of seclusion.
Post Oak is another camping area you can stay in and the one we chose for our stay. This area offers both water and electricity and accommodates larger trailers and RVs. The roads and sites in the area are the most recently paved (as of 2020). The sites are mostly level and the pads are wide. There is also good spacing between sites so you don’t feel too crowded.
In the Cooks Ferry camping area, you’ll find the playground which includes 2 swing sets and a volleyball court. This area also offers water and electric and is very similar to Post Oak. One of the big differences we found in this area is that it has better water access. If you are planning on doing some water recreation while camping and like to pull your boat up close to your site, I would book in the Cooks Ferry area for that reason alone. It’s the biggest of the areas and a good option for larger trailers and RVs as well. Don’t forget to make RESERVATIONS for one of these great campsites.
Texas does such a wonderful job with its Junior Ranger program. We borrowed a Pack from the Ranger Station and were surprised at all the things that were in it. The pack includes a nature journal, information about the park, binoculars, compass, magnifying glass, animal tracks information and lots of other animal and nature info. Our daughter loved using all of the things in the pack. It was so simple to borrow and we just had to return it before we left. So great!
Hiking is one of our favorite things to do while we are camping. It gives you such a great opportunity to experience where you are. We ventured down the nature trail at this park and met a very hungry armadillo. He was digging up everything looking for something to eat. We watched for a bit before he noticed us and headed for his house (we think). This trail is 2 miles long and you can hike or mountain bike it. It goes along the lake shore for half the trail. There is an opportunity to go to the overlook from this trail. We got lost trying to find it, but that’s what adventures are for! They have great signage on the trail so that wasn’t the problem. We just took a wrong turn. I’d recommend this loop trail for any skill level. Just stay on the trail and don’t get lost like we did. TRAIL MAP
Fishing is abundant at the lake. They have several different species. Check out the fishing information HERE They have a boat ramp for lake access as well as fishing piers. We didn’t catch anything while we were there. That’s not unusual though.
The swimming and day use area is close to the fishing pier. They have several picnic tables close to the beach so it would make a great picnic spot. They also have a little swing set which is always a great bonus for those days at the lake. Many things to choose from at this State Park. Don’t miss it!
