Experience Big Bend National Park’s ancient life at the Fossil Discovery Exhibit.
The Exhibit is in the north-central part of the park, a few miles north of Panther Junction. There is plenty of parking for visitors but be advised that there is NO RV parking. Honestly, taking your RV down this road is a big risk. There is absolutely no place to turn around if you have a large rig so be careful and plan ahead.
There are many exhibits to experience here dating back 130 millions years ago. The exhibits include Marine, Coastal Floodplain, Inland Floodplain, Volcanic Highlands, and the Gallery of Giants. Each of these exhibits is in an open air, yet covered, space. There are signs with lots of information and many, many fossils to look at.
Just to the right of the exhibit hall, walk up the ADA-accessible trail to a nice view. At the top, you’ll find some points of interest. Most of these pertain to the geology of Big Bend National Park. As you travel up the trail, on your right, you’ll see a nice place to explore more of the area.
There are some great areas for kids at the Fossil Discovery Exhibit. You can explore just outside the exhibit hall and maybe find a treasure or two. The best spot, though, is the shaded picnic area. A great place to stop for lunch! They also have some “fun facts for kids” signs and some climbing structures.
