Looking for a nice weekend getaway or a day trip in the north central plains of Texas? Check out these must see sights at Lake Arrowhead State Park near Wichita Falls.
Enjoy the views of the park at the Mesquite Ridge Overlook. Find this spot on the 0.5 mile Mesquite Ridge trail that begins in the campground loop. Try to make it out for sunrise or sunset!
You’ll find this interesting tunnel while hiking on the Onion Creek Trail. The north and south ends of the park are separated by FM 2606 and the tunnel provides a safe way to travel from one end of the park to the other. Keep your eye out for all manner of insects and arachnids that like to call this tunnel, and the close surrounding area, home.
If you’re camping at this Texas State Park, you won’t be able to miss the oil well pumpjack. It is located near the dump station in one of the camping loops. It’s an active pump and shows a lot about the history of oil in this area.
Whatever type of camping you are interested in, Lake Arrowhead has got your covered.  They have a variety of electric, water, and equestrian sites to choose from.  We loved the layout of this park as the water/electric section we were in had several different circles with about 6 campsites in each.  It was wonderful!  Check out the map HERE to see what I’m talking about.  They are easy to back into and offer good privacy among trees.  You can also make reservation at this park on their website.Â
This might not be the park for you if you are all about hiking.  Check out the trail map HERE for trail details and locations.  We really liked that they had a connecting trail from the campground to the main trail.  That made it really convenient for us to do a little hiking.
Have some fun in the water at this park. Â The lake is over 16,000 acres and has 106 miles of shoreline. Â It’s a great boating and fishing lake. Â They also have a large designated swimming area.
WARNING: Â Only extremely good players can enjoy. Â The park has a 18-hole disc golf course. Â We were hoping to be able to play a few holes for fun, but every hole is surrounded by extremely tall grass on all sides. Â So, unless you always put your disc exactly where you want it, the likelihood that you’ll end up in some very tall grass searching for your disc is very, very high. Â Hopefully, you’re better at disc golf than us and can take advantage of this course.
We always have to check out the playgrounds at the parks we visit. Â This one was pretty disappointing with outdated, unsafe equipment. Â Hopefully, they can do some updates.
All in all, we had a good time at this Texas State Park. Â It’s perfect for a weekend away or an overnight if you’re just passing through.
