A west Texas star gazing spot! Â Lake Colorado City State Park is wonderful for birding, star gazing, and getting away for the weekend.
This Texas State Park offers over 100 water and electric sites. Â You can find them in 3 different camping loops. Â Rolling Hills and Mesquite Circle Camping areas offer both water and electric with nicely paved sites for both large and small rigs. Â The Lakeview Camping area offers water only, but the sites are just as nice. Â It’s easy to grab a site on or near the water. Â If you’re into fishing this is always a plus. Â There isn’t much shade at the sites, but they are nicely spaced out so you do still have privacy.
This park has only 2 trails. Â A bummer for those of us that love hiking. Â The first of these trails, the Roadrunner Loop Trail. Â It is a 1.8mile, moderate hike. Â I’m always a fan of loop trails because there is always more to see. Â This trail has easy access from Mesquite camping area and parking lot. Â Just past the beginning of the trail, you’ll find a picnic overlook with good views of the lake. Â Continue on to find Rock Ridge. Â This ridge sits next to a hidden pond on the trail that is great for wildlife sightings.
The Cactus Cut Trail runs the length of the park and goes along the lake shore. Â It is a 1 mile, easy to moderate trail that is great for the whole family. Â Bring your binoculars for bird watching.
We’re always looking for a great playground whenever we visit any parks. Â This playground was a bit on the slim side with outdated equipment, but it was a place to play none the less. Â We enjoyed monkey bar races and some swing time. Â This playground is located in the middle of the Mesquite Circle Camping area. Â
