Which hike should I take in Mariposa Grove?
Just inside the south entrance of Yellowstone National Park, you can visit over 500 mature sequoia trees. The park has created beautiful trails for viewing these giants. If you’re planning to visit this area, these trails may be just right for you.
Getting to the trailhead
Before you can even begin your hike among the trees, you have to get there first. That’s going to require you to park at the Mariposa Grove Welcome Plaza. This is a fairly large parking lot, but with so many visitors exploring Yosemite National Park, the lot can fill up. Once you find a spot, make your way to the free shuttle that takes you into the grove.
Trails in Mariposa Grove
If you only have an hour, take the Big Trees Loop Trail. It is an easy 0.3 mile loop. This trail is flat and ADA accessible. You’ll see the Fallen Monarch and learn about life in the grove.
If you have 3 hours, take the Grizzly Giant Loop Trail. This hike is about 2 miles and is easy-moderate with 300 feet of elevation gain. Trees to see are the Bachelor and Three Graces, Grizzly Giant, and California Tunnel Tree.
If you have 5 hours, take the Guardians Loop Trail. This is a 6.5 mile strenuous hike. The trail takes you to the upper part of the grove and past the Wawona Tunnel Tree, Telescope Tree, and Mariposa Grove Cabin.
If you have 6 hours, take the Mariposa Grove Trail. At 7 miles, it’s the longest and most difficult of all the trails. You’ll pretty much see it all on this trail including some beautiful panoramic views. The elevation gain on this trail is about 1,200 feet and can be steep in some areas.
