Mojave National Preserve is one of California’s hidden gems, offering vast, rugged beauty and a rich diversity of landscapes. If you’re planning a day trip to this desert paradise, this 1-day itinerary will take you to some of the best spots in the preserve, including breathtaking hikes, unique geological features, and fascinating history.

Start at Hole-in-the-Wall Information Center

Your adventure begins at the information center.  Located just off the main road in the Mojave National Preserve, this small but informative visitor center will give you an introduction to the park’s history, wildlife, and trails. It’s a good place to grab a map, chat with the rangers, and get any last-minute tips about the preserve.

Hike the Hole-in-the-Wall Nature Trail

After gathering your information, head out to the Hole-in-the-Wall Nature Trail, which is just a short walk from the information center. This easy 1-mile loop takes you through the fascinating volcanic rock formations that give this area its name. The trail features interpretive signs along the way, giving you insights into the area’s geology, desert plant life, and history.

Rings Loop Trail

After your short hike, it’s time to drive south to the Rings Loop Trail.  The hike is a moderate 1.5-mile loop and provides great photo ops, especially for those interested in landscape photography.

Lunch at Kelso Depot Museum and Visitor Center

After your hike, head to Kelso Depot Museum and Visitor Center for a well-deserved lunch break. The Kelso Depot, built in 1923, was once a busy railroad station in the heart of the Mojave Desert. The museum here provides a fascinating glimpse into the region’s history, from its railroad days to the establishment of the national preserve. Grab some lunch from your picnic stash or explore the small visitor center to learn more about the area.  Check operating hours before arriving as renovations are taking place at the Visitor Center.

Kelso Dunes Trail

After lunch, drive a few miles to the Kelso Dunes Trail, one of the most iconic spots in the preserve. The Kelso Dunes are some of the tallest in North America, rising up to 650 feet above the surrounding desert floor. The hike to the dunes is about 3 miles round trip, but the effort is well worth it.

Finish your day at the Granite Mountains

Take in some of the preserve’s most breathtaking views of the Granite Mountains.  A paved pullout seven miles north of Highway 40 gives you an opportunity to park your car and enjoy the view.  Be mindful of the road conditions. It can be a bit bumpy in spots, so drive slowly and enjoy the scenery.
