Bird watchers paradise! The Rio Grande Village Nature Trail is a beautiful hike. There are many bird watching opportunities as well as a great view at the end of this trail. And you know how we love a great view!
This trail is located on the East side of Big Bend National Park in the Rio Grande Village Campground.
You have 2 options for camping at Rio Grange Village. First, you’ll come to the Village store and immediately to your right is the Rio Grange Village RV Full Hook Ups. This is basically just a parking lot with limited spacing between RVs. There is enough space for slide outs on either side, but it’s a little tight. I would suggest making a reservation here as soon as possible as they fill up fast with only 20 sites. If full hook ups is how you like to camp, then I would recommend this area. Past the store and to the left, you will find Rio Grande Village Campground. This campground is your typical National Park campground. They have a dump station with fresh water and bathrooms, but no hook ups at the sites. There are 100 sites in this campground and 60 are reservable. The sites are well spaced out and there is plenty of room to be comfortable. Be advised that half of the campground is a NO GENERATOR ZONE so choose carefully when making a reservation.
First things first – DO NOT forget your binoculars. This 0.75 mile trail is a wildlife haven, especially for birds. You’ll begin across from site #18 in the Rio Grande Village Campground. The first 300 feet are ADA accessible!
Make your way onto the boardwalk and start searching for birds. We found a little duckling right off the start and it was the sweetest thing just swimming around in the wetlands. Once you’ve had your fill of bird watching continue up the trail to the overlook. As you head to the top, you’ll see Boquillas to your right. This village in Mexico gets lots of visitors from Big Bend National Park. Ask a Park Ranger how you can visit Boquillas.
You’ve made it to the overlook and it was a fairly easy hike to the top. Now, you can enjoy the views of the Rio Grande and the Chisos Mountains in the distance. This trail is great for sunrise and sunset!
