Talk about an entrance! When we arrived at Santa Rosa, I was not expecting such beauty. Driving to our site was picturesque as you are up above the lake and can see for miles. We opted to stay in the Rocky Point Campground for two reasons: water and electricity. There are three campgrounds within the park, but only Rocky Point has hook ups.
We reserved site A7, a pull through, and very level. All important things in a great site (or at least that’s my opinion). The only semi-negative thing I would say about this site is that the hook ups were not together. In a typical campsite, the water and electric hook up are right next to one another. Not so here. The electricity was in the middle of the site, but the water hook up was in the back on the opposite side. Very odd but completely doable. I would highly recommend a extension for your electricity. It’s rare when you have to use it, but for sites like this, we needed it.
Reservations can be made on their website up to 6 months in advance.
When you reserve, I would suggest you know what site you want. We always take a look at the campground map so we have a general idea of where we will be in the campground. Campground MAP: http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/SPD/documents/SRPARKMAP.pdf Only certain sites in Rocky Point Loops A & B are available for reservation, so keep that in mind if you’re planning a trip.
This park is not short on views. The campground sits up over the lake and the sunset we got during our evening there did not disappoint. As a BONUS, site A7 is across from the playground. If you travel with kids like we do, a playground is a MUST. After riding in the car for several hours just to get to Santa Rosa, our daughter welcomed the play time.
This is one of those parks we would have loved more time at. When you’re on a long journey, you don’t always get to explore as much as you want to. This is a park we will return to so we can enjoy ALL it has to offer. Much more info on their website: http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/SPD/santarosastatelakestatepark.html
