One of the best views in all of Big Bend, hike the Window Trail and experience the beauty of one of our nations National Parks.
The choice is yours on where to start this trail. Â You can either head to the main Basin trailhead or go to Chisos Basin Campground near site #51. Â We chose to start at the campground because it made the hike a bit shorter and the elevation change wasn’t as great. Â I recommend it if you want to hike this trail. Â Park in the amphitheater parking lot and get started.
Down, down into the canyon. Â The trail starts out great as you make your way to Oak Creek Canyon. Â Watch your step as you’ll notice some scat on the trail. Â You are in Bear and Mountain Lion territory so keep an eye out and make some noise as you hike. Â
The trail has a lot of variety and you almost don’t know where to look sometimes. Â Thankfully, the trail is very obvious so getting lost is nearly impossible. Â Take some time to enjoy the scenery, but be aware that at least the first mile of this trail has no shade so try to go in the morning so you can avoid the heat of the sun.
When you get close to the window, the terrain changes since the trail crosses over the creek several times. Â Lots of steps and rocks are there to help you navigate this area. Â If you have time, sit and listen to the water flow. Â There is even a little waterfall just before you arrive at the window. Â It’s a very peaceful and interesting looking spot on the trail. Â We’ve never seen anything quite like it.
Per the name, this “window” grants you views of Big Bend. It’s another very interesting area in the park. You’re surrounded by high canyon walls. We looked for Mountain Lions while we are lunch with the window view. Once you’ve taken it in, return the way you came and remember that it is a steady climb the entire way back. Take plenty of breaks and bring enough water!
