National Recreation Areas can be full of any number of activities.  Sometimes it’s hard to know where to begin when deciding to spend some time in one of these areas.  Here are our Top 3 Areas to Explore at Amistad National Recreation Area to help make it a little easier for you.

Diablo East Nature Trail

This recreation area doesn’t exactly have a lot of hiking.  It’s mostly known for it’s water activity, and rightfully so.  The water is magnificently clear and if you’ve done a lot of water activity in Texas, you know that’s almost never the case.  If you have time, take a walk on the Nature Trail in the Diablo East area.  It’s a short, 0.3 mile hike with beautiful views of the water.  Nature trails are always perfect introductions to your surrounding and this one is no exception.  Not sure how to get  to this area?  Take a look at the map HERE for reference or head to the Visitor Center first thing. They can guide you on all the opportunities in the park.

Governors Landing Swim Area

Most people travel to Amistad National Recreation Area for the swimming.  Perhaps boating or jet skiing come into play as well, but swimming is at the top of the list.  Because swimming is so popular here, I find it odd that there are no designated swimming areas.  There are a few options that you can ask about at the Visitor Center, but the best one is at Governors Landing.  This is a fairly large area so there is room to spread out if there is a crowd.  The best part, though, is that they have a bathroom here.  None of the other swim spots that they told us about at the Visitor Center had a bathroom so it was a no brained that we picked this one.  I do want to warn you though.  The water is COLD!!!  Since the Rio Grande River feeds this recreation area, it is bringing cooler water with it.  On an extremely hot day in summer, you may welcome this, but if you are enjoying this activity in the spring or fall, it may be chilly.

Pecos River Bridge

This part of the recreation area sits to the far northwest.  Make your way to the overlook area and enjoy the sites and sounds of the Pecos River Bridge.  It was once used by trains, but now welcomes visitors in their motor vehicles.  No matter which area you decide to explore at Amistad, remember to pack your sunscreen and bring plenty of water.
