COLOR. COLOR. COLOR.
One of the most popular trails in all of Yellowstone National Park, the Artists’ Paintpots is a colorful surprise for your eyes. You’ll begin by parking in the designated area. This 1 mile trail has a small parking lot compared to some of the other trails at Yellowstone. It works, but you may have to wait for a spot.
GREEN
After you park your car, you’ll head to the beautiful tree lined trail. These trees hide Paintpot Hill from view. Once you come out to the looping boardwalk, you arrive at… Color. Color. Color.
RED & ORANGE
You’re sure to notice the red and orange river-like flow as it comes off the hill. Don’t forget to check out Blood Geyser as you take a left and begin your loop. Shortly after you begin, you’ll have to go up some stairs. If stairs aren’t your thing, just turn around and head to the right. There is plenty to see all along the lower part of the boardwalk.
Once you’re at the top, take a moment to look out on this amazing thermal area. You’ll notice even more color. Grab a picture! Then, close your eyes and listen. Something’s bubbling.
WHITE
Is this paint or mud? It’s truly incredible the similarities here. You can really tell how this place got its name. As these areas bubble up, watch out…they spit.
BLUE
Make your way down the trail after you’ve ogled at the paint…or mud. Which one was it? You’ll pass some hot springs on the way offering you more color and more beauty. This trail has so much eye candy!
After you’ve made the entire loop, head back to your car through the trees. Once you’ve seen and heard all those pots, you may need a bathroom break. You’re in luck, this area has a restroom in the parking lot.
