This Texas State Park is a gem in the western part of the state.  At Davis Mountains State Park you will experience history, nature, and beautiful views.

Where to stay?

Camping

Davis Mountains State Park has almost 100 campsites to choose from.  Sites range from full hook ups to primitive.  One of the features we were surprised with the most was cable television.  If you’re lucky to get one of the 26 sites that offers this, bring a cable connection.  We were able to get over 40 channels.  See a map of the park HERE

Indian Lodge

Not into camping?  This Texas State Park has a beautiful lodge!  The Indian Lodge is a full service hotel complete with a pool and restaurant.  It has 39 rooms as well as a meeting room for any needs you may have.  This historic hotel was first built by the CCC and offers many glimpses into the past.

Hiking

This park has 7 trails ranging from easy to challenging, but the gem of this park is the trail that leads to Fort Davis National Historic Site.

You’ll begin your hike at the CCC Overlook on Skyline Drive.  From there, just follow the Fort Trail signs.  This trail takes you from the top of the mountain to the base where Fort Davis is waiting for you.  If you’re able to, drive a vehicle down to the Fort and leave it in the parking lot.  This way, you can drive back to the State Park instead of hiking back up the mountain when you have finished exploring Fort Davis.  The hike itself isn’t super challenging.  I would rate it as a moderate hike.  However, if you have to hike back up the mountain, it would probably go from moderate to challenging fairly quickly.  But enough about leaving, let’s talk about the Fort itself.

Fort Davis National Historic Site

Part of the National Park System, Fort Davis National Historic Site is a great place to explore.  There is so much to see and learn.  The Fort itself is very large and made up of several different buildings and structures.  It’s very well preserved and there is so much history on every sign.  Everything is spaced out quite a bit so be prepared for some walking.  Don’t forget to stamp your NPS Passport before you leave.

Around the State Park

One of our favorite things about Davis Mountains State Park is that there is so much more than just the park to explore and appreciate.  On our way into the park, we stopped in Marfa and saw Prada Marfa.  While staying at the park, we hiked down to Fort Davis and also went to a Star Party at the McDonald Observatory.  These are all wonderful, family-friendly things you should experience while at this park.  We loved Davis Mountains and hope to go back and explore even more!
