The Mystic Falls trail at Yellowstone National Park is what I would call a “2 for 1 special.” Biscuit Basin and Mystic Falls are both spectacular from beginning to end.
Biscuit Basin
Park at Biscuit Basin and walk along the boardwalks to begin your journey. You’ll come across some amazing pools and geysers. There are many photo opportunities along this trail so be camera ready.
As you walk, you’ll come to Sapphire Pool. Possibly the most amazing of all the sites at Biscuit Basin. It was certainly our favorite. The color and depth of the pool will take your breath away.
The Biscuit Basin boardwalk makes a loop and takes you straight back to the parking lot. You can choose just to walk along the boardwalk and skip the trail to Mystic Falls all together. Of course, I’d recommend going on to the waterfall.
Trail to Mystic Falls
The trailhead to Mystic Falls is halfway around the Biscuit Basin boardwalk loop. So, grab a photo with the sign and start your journey. This trail is a short 1 mile hike to the waterfall. 0.3 miles after you begin, you’ll come to a fork in the trail and you can choose to go left or right. Left takes you straight to the falls and is the easier of the options. Right takes you to the overlook. Both directions are 0.7 miles to your destination. However, if you choose the overlook, be prepared for a more strenuous hike. You’ll make your way up 500 feet along several switchbacks and arrive at a beautiful view.
We chose to go left. Following the Little Firehole River as we hiked on the trail was such a surprise. You can hear the water as you walk by and know that a waterfall is coming your way. Exciting and calming all at the same time.
And then, you arrive. It was even more beautiful than I had pictured. And so tall at 70 feet in height. It’s not your typical waterfall rushing down in one fell swoop. It cascades in a way, like a dance. It’s a series of quickly rushing water and then slight calm before it rushes again.
It’s mesmerizing to watch. We took some pictures, listened to the rushing water, and enjoyed the view. You will find yourself staying here a long time.
