The picturesque view at Trout Lake will have you wanting to hike this trail every time you visit Yellowstone National Park. Getting to that view…could be a challenge.

First, you have to concur the parking situation. At the trailhead, there isn’t much of a parking lot. I’d call it a pull off…and that’s being nice about it. 10 cars is about the limit for this little area and if you’re at Yellowstone during a busy season, that could pose a problem. There are some additional pull offs down the road in either direction. You’ll have to walk back to the trailhead and the road can get really busy. Be careful!

Once you’re at the trailhead, it’s time to hike up the steep, tree filled trail that leads to the lake. Most reviews deem this trail as “EASY” but they neglect to tell you about the 0.5mi climb you have to master first. It is a challenge, but you can do it. Slow and steady leads to that beautiful view. Once you’re there, this 2 mile trail makes its way in a loop around the lake.

Halfway around the loop, you’ll come to small wooden bridge and…the best part of the trail. If you’re hiking in May or June, you may just get the chance to see the trout spawning. Sit on the bridge with a snack and watch those little friends swim their hearts out. Swimming upstream can’t be easy, but their determination is incredible.

Sit a little longer on the bridge and you might encounter a Pronghorn. This one came out of nowhere. The lake is frequented by many animals for food and water. Since it is located in the Lamar Valley area, there are plenty of wildlife that come by. Beware because one of them could be a bear. Be on the look out!

Venture off the loop, just past the bridge, and follow the stream. Look for more trout making their way upstream. It’s a magical sight. Then, get back on the loop and make your way back down to the parking lot. It should be much easier going down.
