This New Mexico state park sits against the Sacramento Mountains and has some really great views. If you’re looking for a park to go to for the weekend or a place to stay while you go and visit White Sands National Park, Oliver Lee Memorial is a good choice.
Because this park is so close to the Sacramento Mountains, it makes for a slightly difficult campground situation. Because of the terrain, most campsites are sloped and can make leveling difficult. The campground is split into Loops A and B, loop A being more for RVs and loop B for tents. Half of the campsites have electricity and water, while the rest do not. Check out the CAMPGROUND MAP for more details.
The biggest issue is that the sites with water and electricity are the most sloped since they are in the middle of the campground. The sites on the top and bottom of the loops seems to be the most level (although not that level), but don’t have any hookups. We were in site 24E which was significantly sloped, but we made it work. We wanted the hookups more than we wanted a level site. So, there in lies your choice: a level site OR hookups? HERE is more information about camping at the park and making RESERVATIONS.
There are only 3 hiking trails at this state park, but it does have variety.
This nature trail is less than 0.5 miles and is very easy. You’ll get some nice mountain views and see the remains of Frenchy’s Cabin. Read the signs on the trail to learn about this unique homestead and bring the family since it’s a good trail next to the visitor center.
The trailhead for this moderately difficult trail is near site 36 in Loop B campground. While this trail is only .36 miles (one-way), it’s very rocky so good footwear is a must. The highlights of this trail are big shade trees, good views, and a wet spring.
This trail is the most strenuous of all the hikes at Oliver Lee Memorial State Park. It is a 5.2 mile, 3200 ft elevation gain, hike through the canyon and to the top of the mountain. And that’s just one way! It has the absolute best views around, but think before you decide to go on this hike. Make sure you have enough time and bring plenty of water and snacks with you.
The Oliver Lee Ranch House is a historic structure at this park. If you are interested in learning more about the park and the its history, you should absolutely visit the ranch house. Guided tours are available and you can contact the park staff to get the schedule.
