Enjoy some of the best views and camping at this Arkansas State Park
Arkansas is one of those states where you can find beautiful state parks. Â Queen Wilhelmina is known for fall color views and its “Castle in the Clouds” lodge. Â Visitors who come here to camp, stay at the lodge, or enjoy a fall drive, love everything this park has to offer year after year.Â
Camping atop Rich Mountain
Most mountain top camping is unique and this park is no exception. Â You know you’re on a mountain when the clouds start rolling in in the morning. Â The campground at this Arkansas State Park is…simple. Â It’s one road that goes in a straight line and has camp sites on both sides of the road. Â Check out the CAMPGROUND MAP so you can get a visual of what I’m talking about. Â When you enter the park, you’ll want to take a right. Â If you go left, it will take you to the lodge and you’ll have to circle back to the campground. Â You’ll pass the Mountain Glory Station (more on that below) and immediately come to the sites. Â Hopefully, you have already made a reservation as this park does fill up. Â When making reservations, be aware that if you are planning to stay on a Friday or Saturday night, you must book both nights. Â Arkansas State Parks does not allow reservations for partial weekends. Â
Ok, back to the sites. Â They are fairly level and angled well to the road which makes backing into them, not as painful. Â Sites near the bathroom (which is in the middle of the campground) are more straight on to the road so I wouldn’t recommend those if you are in a large rig. Â There are a variety of size lengths so you can find a spot to accommodate your rig. Â 35 RV sites have electricity and water, along with 5 tent sites with water, and 1 walk-in primitive tent site.
Things To Do at the park
Hiking Trails
Check out the descriptions for each trail above. Â HERE is the map of the trails. Â You can walk to all of them from your campsite or the parking area if you are at this park for the day. Â I do want to mention something about Lovers’ Leap Trail. Â You can access this trail either in front of the lodge or behind the lodge since this is a loop trail. Â I would recommend beginning the trail on the south loop, which is in front of the lodge (the side that has the flag pole). Â There is some elevation gain on the trail and it’s easier to go that way…in my opinion.
Mountain Glory Station
The park is known for its family friendly activities. Â Along with hiking trails, there is also a putt putt course, ice cream shop, and mini train that you can ride through the park. Â Prices vary for the activities, but they’re all affordable and fun!
Wonder House
Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, the Wonder House is over 100 years old. Â If you can believe it, the house actually has 9 levels. Â It was built in 1931 and used as a vacation cabin until the late 1950s. Â FREE tours are available on Saturdays.
