Camp, Hike, and visit a Holy City

Oklahoma doesn’t always get the love it deserves for it’s great outdoor recreation.  There are many parks around the state and Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is one of the best.  There’s something for all types of adventures in all seasons.  Check out this park and let it surprise you.

Camping in the Park

Wichita Mountain’s camping is very similar to many state parks in the area.  They have RV, tent, backcountry, and group camping options in the park.  The Doris Campground is a modern facility that offers electricity at some sites.  There is water available at each camping loop, but not at the individual sites.  See the CAMPGROUND MAP for details.  Loops B & E have electricity and are best for RVs.  You can make reservations for your stay up to 6 months in advance on recreation.gov.  Be sure to check the length of the site you want to book.  There are very few sites that can accommodate a large RV.

The Holy City of the Wichita's

This is probably one of the most unique aspects of the park.  When you arrive at The Holy City, you can’t help but wonder what all these interesting buildings are.  Each year on Easter, you can experience their annual Easter Pageant.  90% of the buildings that you see aren’t actually buildings at all.  They are set pieces for the production.  There are a few buildings you can go into like the chapel, museum, and gift shop.  The chapel is beautiful and used year round for weddings and events.  Take some time to walk around the area and don’t forget to stop by the “Christ of the Wichita’s” statue before you leave.

If you happen to be at the park on or near the Easter season, plan to see the pageant.  It’s a completely FREE event.  Bring your lawn chair, blanket, and cooler and enjoy the show. Check out their Facebook Page for details about the show.
