Need to get away for the weekend in southern New Mexico?  Rockhound State Park in Deming may be just what you are looking for.  Check out this guide for some weekend fun.

A Weekend Guide

Camping

The campground at Rockhound State Park is one of the more beautiful settings that we have been able to camp at.  It’s set against the Little Florida Mountains and only take about 20 minutes to get to from I-10.  That’s one of the reason it makes for a great overnight spot or weekend trip!

There are about 30 camp sites, 23 of which have water and electric hookups.  There is no sewer at the sites, but there is a dump station.  The sites are all well taken care of by the campground hosts at the park.  They even escorted us to our site when we checked in.

The sites themselves are a good size.  You have the place to park your camper as well as a covered picnic table, fire pit, and trash can.  Let’s not forget about the really great view!

Hiking

We always love hiking when we can stay at a state park.  Rockhound offers 4 trails and I would highly recommend the 0.78 mile Thunder Egg Trail.  The trail begins on one side of the campground and ends on the other.  You’ll make your way up towards the mountain.  The elevation gain isn’t a deal breaker, but you will do a bit of climbing at the beginning.  Make sure to keep an eye out for longhorn sheep.  They are known to roam the area!

Don’t forget to stop and enjoy the view of Dragon Ridge.  You may have noticed it as you were driving into the park.  It’s a beautiful setting which probably has even more sheep.  Check out Lover’s Leap Trail in the Spring Canyon area of the park if you want a better chance at a sheep sighting.  HERE is a map to help you out.

All About Rocks

The park is known for the unique geology of the area.  There is a GEM ROCKS reference post in the campground.  As you’re exploring this beautiful place, hopefully you can find some of the things that make it Rockhound.
